Sushi Zanmai

I was at Avenue K, Kuala Lumpur during the Deepavali’s public holiday with my friend. After chatting for hours at the Urbean, we moved Sushi Zanmai for dinner. We took quite long before we could decide what and where to eat because we are not familiar with this area.

We ordered three dishes and shared among us.

Karaage Chicken Donburi
Sushi Zanmai

It is a deep fried chicken meat with soy sauce coated with seasoned flour. It is quite common food you can find in Japanese restaurant. It looks appealing and tastes good. The sauce can mix with the Japanese rice when you eat it. If you want extra sauce, I would suggest you to put the Teriyaki sauce.

Ebi Okonomiyaki
Sushi Zanmai

It is a delicious savory pancake that is simple yet filled with a lot of shrimps, covered with dried bonito flakes on top of the pancake and mayonnaise and some Japanese sauce called Okonomiyaki Sauce. It is really nice.

Lastly, we ordered the Saba with Teriyaki Sauce. It took quite sometime before it was served. The fish portion was just nice for two person. I prefer it has more sauce since it is cooked in Teriyaki style. It does not come with rice, so you can order separately if you wish.

Well, Sushi Zanmai is still maintaining its standard for this visit. I am satisfied with the food that we ordered and the time spent together.

Location: Lot M-19, Mezzanine Floor, Avenue K, Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.
Ambiance: The atmosphere of this restaurant is a bit noisy, probably because we was sitting near the kitchen. Overall, the restaurant is spacious, clean and bright.
Rating: 3/5. Food quality remains the same for me. The taste is good. The price and portion maintain reasonable.

Old Town White Coffee

I am really sorry for being absence for two weeks. I was travelling back to my home country, Malaysia for work related stuff and run for the Standard Chartered Marathon held on 12 October 2014 in Kuala Lumpur. It has been a hectic week, however, it was full of joys and I got to meet a few new friends.

Since, I am back to Kuala Lumpur, I would like to write some of the places that I visited during my stay. First and foremost, The Old Town White Coffee. There is nothing spectacular that I would like to start writing it first.

I was here on the Deepavali’s public holiday with my aunt and there was no crowd at 1.00PM. We settled down and ordered the set lunch meal.

Dry Chilli Pan Mee

Old Town White Coffee
The Dry Chilli Pan Mee from this restaurant is almost similar as the normal Pan Mee that we eat at Chinese coffee-shops or food courts. The differences are the type of the noodle and additional egg. In Singapore, it is common to add egg into the Pan Mee and this type of noodle they called it as U-mian. I will write the Singapore style of Pan Mee in the near future to compare the differences.

I asked the chili flakes to be separated from the noodle so that I can add in according to my level of spiciness and mix all the ingredients together before eating it. It tastes good with the chili flakes, does not look oily and generous amount of ingredients, which consists of minced chicken, sliced mushrooms, egg, vegetables, anchovies, some spring onions and fried onions. It comes with a bowl of soup too.

It is one of the good selections to choose from their set lunch menu and it comes with a drink of your choice. The Iced Lemon Tea with less ice is our common drink. We also ordered the Kaya and Butter Toast and ala-carte Dry Curry Chicken Hor Fun. The waiter told us that the hor fun was not available, so we chose meehoon and I did not take a picture of it.

Another disappointment is the dry curry chicken did not have much curry taste. They put too much of dark soya sauce and it covered the curry taste. I hope they can improve it.

Iced Lemon Tea and Kaya and Butter Toast

There is no complaint for the drink and snack. It is done to its perfection. Simple and nice.

Location: 26, Jalan Jejaka 7, Taman Maluri, Kuala Lumpur.
Ambiance: No crowd when we visited the place. The service was quite fast and the waiters were attentive to our orders.
Rating: 2.5/5. It is due to some disappointments on their food for this visit.

Ayam Penyet Ria

Ayam Penyet Ria
It is another meet up with friends in September. Four of us went to Ayam Penyet Ria, an Indonesian restaurant which is located at Century Square, Tampines for lunch together.

It is a good choice to have Ayam Penyet than other dishes because it is their signature dish. The chicken is not too dry or hard to eat as some of the chicken fried too long. The portion of the chicken was big, I guess it is a whole breast meat.

Another thing I liked is the sambal. It is spicy and aromatic. It goes well with the chicken and rice too. You may find it spicy if you do not eat chili often. It does not come with rice, means you have to order it separately. After all, it is still reasonable price to eat here.

It is quite a lot of people eating here during the lunch time. However, there is no queue when we are at the restaurant.

Address: 2 Tampines Central 5 Century Square #B1-27, Singapore.
Ambiance: The environment of this restaurant is simple, crowded, tables and seating can be improved.
Rating: 3/5. Food and services are reasonably good for my first visit to this restaurant. The food does not need to take long to be served.

Aunty Nat

I went back to Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia on the last week of September to meet up with my cousin who returned home from Sydney, Australia too. I took extra leaves as well so that I could spend more time in Kuala Lumpur and met up with friends.

Days before, I reconnected with my friend through Skype and we exchanged few interesting topics together. So, I called him out for gathering. Initially, I planned to meet up with him at KL Sentral, where he is working. Upon knowing that another of our friends also planned to go back KL, reunion dinner was held at Aunty Nat, Mid Valley, Kuala Lumpur.

Knowing each other for four years, it was so great to meet up again and shared each other interesting stories. As all of us used to be lunch buddies, choosing a place for dinner is not hard especially one of my friends wanted so much to go back to Aunty Nut for her favourite dishes.

Without hesitation, Kangkung with Belacan is a must to be ordered. It seems like we could not eat without it.

It is followed by the Fried Chicken which is also our friend’s favourite dish when eat lunch here. It is a crispy, marinated chicken. It tastes pretty close to the Malay style fried chicken and it is not very dry.

It seems like we are keep ordering dishes that we always eat, next is the Tofu with Minced Meat and heavy gravy. I remembered it was our friend’s favourite dish that our friend asked for extra rice to finish the gravy.

Lastly, we ordered the Assam Sotong. Again, it is another friend’s favourite dish. It was a great try for me because I tried Assam Fish and Assam Chicken before this. It has a strong assam taste, I wondered what kind of ingredients were used to prepare the sauce.

Four dishes for three persons as dinner was just nice. The taste of all the dishes we ordered was great. I am sure it is not because we missed the food here. The cook maintains the good standard of each dishes. Assam Sotong is the interesting one.

It is a great dinner for us that night. Chit-chatting about the past and present and exchanging laughs made the day even longer to come to an end.

It was a quiet night as well at Aunty Nut and who knows I bumped into another friend having her dinner with her husband at next table. It is my pleasure to meet her again too after our last met at Menara IGB, Mid Valley sometime ago. We nodded at each other when she left the place.

Address: No. 5-1, Mid Valley Boulevard, Mid Vally City, Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.
Ambience: The environment on that night was quiet, suitable for spending time with friends. The restaurant is spacious and can allow a big group of 10 people sitting together at big round or rectangle tables there. On normal lunch time, this restaurant is full of people and very noisy too.
Rating: 4/5. It is nice taste and authentic for all the dishes that we ordered. The portion of each dishes is generous. The services and food serving time are reasonable where the waiters are attentive to our requests.
