Chuan Chuan Le

Address: 64 Horne Road, Singapore 209072.
It is a fusion Chinese cuisine, specializing in BBQ, according to the website after a Google search. They serve Sze Chuan food too. We were there for dinner on the March 14th, after the weekly run for our upcoming marathon in April.

One of our colleagues suggested to try the food here and we walked down to Horne Road from the office. The restaurant opens until late, 4 am in the morning, however, they begin their business in the evening time. Since, it is a BBQ restaurant, it is reasonable to open at late hours.

Unable to recall the name of the dish. However, the dish is delicious, tasted well, not over-cooked, not too oily and most importantly, it is not too spicy although the dried chilies on the surface seems a lot. The best thing is it is not too oily, where the amount of chili oil controls the taste of the food quite well. It consists of generous amount of chicken meats, vermicelli and bean sprouts.

Then, we ordered two other dishes. The hot plate tofu, which I hardly do it myself at home and a plate of vegetable. The hot plate tofu serves with the Chinese sausage, not the dried Chinese sausage, just to be clear. It is quite unique in a way. Other ingredients are quite normal which are small sized prawns, vegetables and sliced mushroom. Overall, it is well tasted, just a little a bit oily.

Lastly, we added on the grilled enoki mushroom with chilies and garlic. A simple dish with minimal ingredients and yet, it is tasted good too. I can try to make this at home one day.

Mrs. Pho

Address: 349 Beach Road, Singapore 199570.
Mrs. Pho serves authentic Vietnamese cuisine which some of my colleagues liked them. They have another branch which located at the Rangoon Road, which serves almost the same kind of dishes and the interior of the restaurant is a lot better than the Beach Road. Both restaurants serve their best and authentic food.

As usual, I will order the Beef Pho for my lunch. The portion of noodle with the sliced beef sometimes can be not consistent. However, there will be at least 6-8 slices of beef, plenty of vegetable, prefer them to give more vegetable, just like the local Vietnamese food stalls in Vietnam do.

The soup broth is the best together with the delicious, tender beef serve with the al-dente pho. To add a bit more taste, sometimes adding some lime juice into the soup brings up the taste. You can ask for the lime from the waitress if you do not see it on the table.

It has been a norm for us to add on the cockles whenever we visited the restaurant. It is cooked with some sweet spicy sauce. According to my friend, it is the fish sauce fried with lards and it gives this kind of favoury on the cockles’ shells. It is tasted delicious even to go without the salt.

The lards can be sinful, however, this dish is not at all. It is worth for the try. Just another tip of eating the cockles which I just learned it during my last trip to this restaurant recently, smell it before you put into your mouth.

Why?

Well, during that visit, our plate of cockles was not fresh, smelly and we did not able to enjoy the fullness of the dish as usual. It is important to ensure the freshness.

Wisdom

For those who follow Pastor Prince, year 2018 is the year of God’s hesed wisdom. I picked this lines, “God wants to teach you how to make every moment count, make decisions that lead to good success, and turn around every situation of lack and defeat!” from his website and the video from the Youtube.

On one of the late Friday’s evening, just before I left the office, I overheard a conversation between my project manager with the team and part of the conversation surprised me. I walked up and reached them. I advised them the right way of doing thing. I believed it was God’s wish to deliver the God’s hesed wisdom through me. God has given me the wisdom to do things right.

However, I stunned with the reply which left me speechless. I felt time was just wasted and I decided to leave myself alone, packed my stuff and went back home.

In the video, the last words shared was God will turn the valley of trouble into a valley of blessing. So, I believed God, no matter how difficult the situation, He will lead me to the brighter path, a successful path. Amen.

Chye Huat Hardware

Address: 150 Tyrwhitt Road, Singapore 207563.
I have no ideas what made my colleague to treat us a drink at Chye Huat Hardware on the Friday’s afternoon. It was a message shared by another colleague, who went out for lunch together with us, 9 of us, and told us to meet up at the cafe as one of our colleagues wanted to treat us a drink.

Okay, there was another account saying that it could be just that one colleague wanted to treat one of the 9 colleagues but the rest of them dragged into the picture. Anyway, it is a free drink.

It was my third visit to this cafe, and second time trying their coffee. This round, because of the weather, I chose to drink cold brew. The Ethiopia Suke Quto, Cold Brew Black. It consists of floral, citrus, Earl Grey tea and peach. It tasted like kopi-o. 🙂

I have no ideas whether it supposed to have Earl Grey tea’s taste but it has none, purely on coffee even the floral or peach taste was not strong. My colleagues tried the Cold Brew White which tasted better because of having milk inside.

We ordered the lemon pie and shared it as you can see the pie from the background of my drink. Thank you for the treat. It was a wonderful Friday’s lunch for whatever reason it was.

Ming Chung Restaurant

Address:  67 Maude Road, Singapore 208348.

Since I began my half marathon’s practice with three other guys in my company, I was able to enjoy some good food for dinner at different locations, after the run. As the practice usually took place in the evening for an hour, by the time we started our dinner, it was usually around 10pm. The locations of our dinner were usually just nearby our office.

For this time, we went to a Heng Hua cuisine. If you are wondering what is Heng Hua. According to Google search, it tells me they are minority dialect from Putian, Fujian province in China.

One of its signature dishes, the fried mee sua. It was well cooked and well tasted,  topped with peanuts and seaweed. They gave generous amount of ingredients, with some prawns, sliced meat, and green vegetable. For this cuisine, ingredients such as seaweed, clams, or other seafood are its main ingredients.

Since seafood is their main ingredients, I am pretty sure, they know how to cook good dishes with seafood. We ordered the Fried Clams to share among us. Although the clams are small in size, they are fresh and well tasted. It is a good choice, delicious and worth to try.

Seven & Ate

Address: 78 Horne Rd, Singapore 209078.

Seven & Ate is a new cafe which replaced the Bao Makers, which is located near by the Lavender MRT station. Along this road, there are several cafes to hop if you around there for the whole day.

I visited the cafe along with three other colleagues on the Friday’s evening after work. It was the Chinese Valentine’s Day which is also known as Chap Goh Mei in Cantonese. On this eventful day, normally the Chinese single ladies will head to the river with the mandarin oranges to throw them into the river. It is said the right man who pick up the mandarin orange will find the lady and their relationship will blossom.

Unfortunately, in Singapore, I think if we were to throw the mandarin oranges into the Singapore River, the next thing we would get was a summon from the police officers, not a Mr. Right.

The waitress told us this was their new menu and plenty of the food from the menu are sold out. I was wondering how nice was it until some of them sold out. One of the food on the menu which remained same was the Pork and Oyster Burger.

I googled for this burger reviews as I tried it with having done my research. They say the burger comes with Honey Mustard Pork Patties, Fried Oysters, Onion Sour Cream and BBQ Sauce in between two buns. Well, the pork patties were really juicy and the fried oysters were crispy and fresh. The burger bun was soft but crispy from the outside. It came with the nacho chips served on the side.

Next, my colleague ordered the Spiced Blackened Chicken. It was nicely presented with garlic and sliced orange. Perhaps, it called blackened chicken, the chicken meat was grilled slightly darker but it was not too dry.

Next, I tried a small bite of the Duck Confit served with red wine sauce and red wine poached pear. It was soft and delicious, just that it looked quite small portion.

Lastly, it was the Hot Wings. I has about six wings with the chili paste spreaded across the wings. I did not try them, however, my colleagues said it was spicy.

Overall, the food is quite nice presentation, plenty of rooms for improvement if they want to change their menu again next time. The ambiance of the cafe is a little a bit noisy since it is a drinking place too. It is not spacious, probably cannot hold a big group of people. The cafe is decorated with old musical pictures and several instruments, so I am hoping to see a live band in the future with small groups of people enjoying the night.
