It has been a while since my last visit to Pavilion and now, it has a new wing called Pavilion Elite with many branded outlets and restaurants situated at this new wing. Besides that, I came across a another new wing in the old Pavilion, the Level 7 which has plenty of restaurants there.

One of them is the Pig and Wolf. It is a non-Halal restaurant. My apologies to all my Muslim readers.

According to the Pavilion’s website, Pig and Wolf restaurant is a subsidiary of the popular 3 Little Pigs & The Big Bad Wolf. It is a casual dining restaurant that offers a mixture of Western and Asian cuisines. It offers from pork burgers, pasta to pork ribs.

Together with my friend, we explored this new restaurant. Initially, we wanted to order the set meal which comes with a soft drink and soup of the day. However, after looking at the a la carte dishes, we decided to order separately which we can have what we wanted to try.

During our visit they were doing a ‘Buy 1 Free 1’ promotion for the coffee’s menu which we both felt it was a better offer than having the soft drinks from the set meal. So, my friend picked the Iced Mocha and I chose the Iced Latte. Their coffee is just right and does not need extra sugar syrup.

My friend spotted the luncheon meat fries on the menu and we ordered one basket to share together. It is a simple appetizer which we can do it at home too. The luncheon meat is slightly fried and it tastes nice and crispy.

We ordered the Mighty Porky Burger which is one of the recommended dish on their menu. The presentation of the burger is still alright with some salads on one side and wedges on the another side. I liked the crispy and hot wedges. As for the pork burger, the pork patty is slightly dry.

We ordered the Pork Steak too which was recommended by the waiter. The meat was well marinated and strong garlic smell. The meat is juicier than the pork burger and it has the same side dishes.

Overall, the food portion is good enough, maybe they can improve the taste of the food to be more attractive. The environment in the restaurant is good and quiet, suitable for big group of people as there are plenty of long tables in the restaurant. We spent our afternoon here for lunch and coffee.

Another throwback entry of January’s event. A day before the Chinese New Year, I went to the Mid Valley Shopping Centre in Kuala Lumpur with my cousins and my uncle in the late afternoon to settle their issues at Digi centre which is located at The Gardens Mall.

Initially, they wanted to try the food court which is located at Mid Valley’s level three, Food Junction. Unfortunately, the food court is closed that day.

Instead of keep searching for the next restaurant for late lunch, we crossed to the opposite side and settled down at Old Town White Coffee. It was half-crowded when we entered the restaurant and the waiters served us immediately after the tables were arranged for us. We sat outside of the restaurant, just two steps from their entrance.

It took us a while to decide and place our order. Some of us ordered the noodles, the steamed rice and the signature nasi lemak and drinks. They served the noodles first, followed by the cold drinks and then hot drink and next, the nasi lemak and lastly, the steamed rice.

I ordered the dry egg noodle with barbeque chicken. It does not come with a small bowl of soup. It seems different than the normal Old Town outlets or this set meal does not come with soup.

The noodle texture is disappointing because it is soggy and less taste. The chicken meat are generous and so does the vegetables. It is just a bit hard to eat such a big stalk of vegetable 🙂

I completed my meal with a glass of warm soya milk and I felt filling. I would recommend to go to normal Old Town White Coffee restaurant instead of the Signature brand which makes no difference except the prices and bigger plates and bowls!

Hutong Lot 10

I am back to Malaysia right now and I am looking for a job in Singapore. While I cannot always be in Singapore to search jobs, wait for interview’s calls and get offered because I did not hold a valid long term pass that allows me to stay longer, so I come back to Malaysia and continue the searching. Well, luck is not at my side yet as right now the people are still on the holidaying mood and for Chinese business, it is about year end closing before the arrival of the Roaster Chinese New Year in the late January. I am positively looking forward to get a new job and have a new start and leave the rest behind.

For now, I am in Malaysia where all the great food are and I am back into action to write more food reviews. I am glad that recently I have met many friends who are willing to go out with me to keep trying new places, have good food together and spend the rest of the day talking nonsense! They are awesome people.

In my recent revisiting Hutong Lot 10 at Bukit Bintang, Kuala Lumpur, I have a great moment shared with my friends from Bangkok, Thailand who came to Malaysia for holidays. They are my ex-colleagues from my previous company and I am glad that they rang me up for a catch up in the city.

There are few food stalls I love to revisit and try their food again. Firstly, the Imbi Road Pork Noodle.  I visited my “old friend” stall. It was after 2pm when I dropped by to buy my lunch for my aunt and myself. The boy is still remember me, ‘buy double set and take away!’ I took away the pork balls noodle with my favourite noodle selection, the meehoon mixes with kway teow. Then, the man behind the hot boiling pot prepared the noodle and pork balls for me. He is still remember me too!

We chatted while he prepared the noodle with his hungry stomach (he told the boy to keep an eye on his bowl of noodle from being taken away by cleaner). It is wonderful to see some old friends. They are gold and great people who prepared me the hearty pork balls noodle.

The quality and taste of the pork noodle is well maintained with great amount of noodle, minced pork and pork balls. It is filling and heavy meal. You can order soup or dry version. They use pork bone to prepare the soup broth.

Secondly, I tried the fried noodle from the famous food stall named Kim Lian Kee. They are famous with their fried Hokkien noodle, the fried black, thick yellow noodle. However, during my takeaway I ordered the Moonlight Hor Fun.

As you can see from the picture, you know how sinful this fried hor fun is. Hor fun is similar as kway teow. This fried noodle is a black and dry version of Cantonese fried noodle. The ingredients used by the cook are same as the Cantonese fried noodle but it did not come with heavy gravy. They cook with lards and its oil, and great wok hei. If I visit their stall again, i will have my video taken while they are busy cooking.

Back to the taste, oh well, heavenly great, I cannot stop eating it. The only thing I do not like is oily but this is fried hor fun! The noodle can satisfy two stomachs of the day.

Thirdly is from the Soong Kee Beef Noodle food stall. It is still one of the best noodle stalls inside this Hutong Lot 10 food court. Cheap and filing bowl of noodle comes with a spoonful of minced meat and some vegetable on top of the springy wanton noodle. I believe they make their own noodles daily and the cook is skillful enough to cook it until it is springy and not soaky at all. When I mixed the minced meat with the noodle, I saw extra oils at the bottom of the bowl. The cook spread a spoonful of oils on top of the noodle as soon as the noodle is ready to be served in each bowl. Do try their beef balls noodle too, it is their signature dish which goes well with their handmade chilies paste.

While you are waiting in queue to get your bowl of noodle, you can watch ow the cook prepared the noodle, by adding few noodles together into the hot boiling pot, stirring it with the big chopsticks and large strainer for noodle. It is amazing ‘the making of…’.

Hutong Lot 10 serves all the famous local foods in Malaysia. It is a great place to be if you want to try the local foods at one place. It is air-conditioned, clean and spacious. It might be slightly expensive to eat it here but you get a better and safe environment because they have many cleaners cleaning the tables and security guards who go rounds.

I am sorry to my Muslim reader as this entry is about non-Halal food.

Yoshinoya Hanamaru

I was at Mid Valley on the 2nd day of the New Year with two other friends. It was a public holiday in Malaysia. My friend introduced this Japanese restaurant to us when we were asking for a location for that night’s dinner. It is located next to the Muji store at the 3rd floor center court.

My friend and his friend wanted to try this restaurant sometimes ago but it was full house. During our visit, we waited a while for a table for three people. I went to this restaurant again a week later, when two of my Singaporean friends came down to Kuala Lumpur for weekend. My friend wanted to have Japanese food and her boyfriend suggested to try this Japanese restaurant too!

The Yoshinoya offers the rice selection and the Hanamaru offers the udon and tempura on their menu. On both visits I tried their udon selection instead of the rice because I do not find the rice selection is attracting.

First visit, I tried their on of their udon on the specialties menu, Mentaiko Mayo Bukkake. Mentaiko mayo, the cod roe mayo is quite commonly used as sauce for udon and pasta in some Japanese restaurant. It comes with soup and dry version. For this first try, I tried their dry version, while my friend’s boyfriend tried the soup version on my second visit. Both of us gave our thumb up!

I love the mentaiko taste which goes well with the plain udon and it does not require to add extra sauce as it has a strong taste, a little salty, savoury. They put quite a generous amount of the mentaiko mayo to mix with the udon. My friend asked me if a bowl of udon would be enough for me as dinner. Initially, I thought it would not, but I was wrong, the mayo can make my stomach feel filling and the udon is thick, springy and generous amount.

I recommended to my Singaporean friends to try during my second visit to this restaurant a week later for our lunch in Mid Valley. Her boyfriend said the same thing and to him, it is worthy to eat here.

The second udon which I tried Tori Dashi Udon from their standard menu. And, I made a wrong choice because the clear and plain soup is tasteless. Their soup broth is made of dried kelp and sardines, so I wonder why the soup can be tasteless. Besides that, the shredded chicken meat are tasteless too, I feel it would be great if I added some soy sauce to make the whole bowl of udon tastes better. This udon needs some improvement.

I tried the chicken karaage, the common Japanese fried chicken and it is just alright for my taste bud. I saw another table was having 4-5 chicken karaage on their plate. My friends tried their tempura too. The price for the fried stuff is not expensive.

The restaurant serves drink as well and you can check out the drink counter at the center of the restaurant, otherwise, the Japanese green tea available too. The food may look small in portion but it is still filling with other add-on from the counter. This Japanese udon restaurant seems like a fast food restaurant. I am not sure if this restaurant is an Halal restaurant or not and they do have Malay people eating in this restaurant.

I feel thankful to have two groups of great friends trying out food with me over this weekend. Thank you so much for my friend who introduced this Japanese restaurant and then I recommended my Singaporean friends to try the same restaurant too. Also, thank you for my Singaporean friends for the lunch treats. If time permitted, I will try the similar concept restaurant in Chinatown, Singapore!

Greyhound Cafe

It is my second visit to this cafe and restaurant which is located at the Bukit Bintang, Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. During my first visit, I tried their desserts with a friend and this time I tried their main courses with another three friends. It was our gathering after some three years we did not meet up because of busy with working life.

Spicy Spaghetti Thai Style
Pasta cooks in Thai style is quite normal in a Thai restaurant if they serve fusion food. I satisfied with this pasta. It is delicious and not very spicy. Using the angel hair stir-fries with meat, mushroom, cherry tomatoes, peppercorns, basil leaves and of course chilies. It is worthy to give a try on this Thai fusion pasta.

Spaghetti with Crab Meat with Prawn Cream Sauce
Having such a long name, this main course was being recommended by their waiter during our visit. My friend ordered it and no complaints about it. I think it should be delicious too because of the combination of the prawn cream sauce with crab meat.

Minced Chicken with Sweet Basil and Hot Chilies.
This is the most popular dish in Thailand whenever we visit Thailand’s street food. It cooks with minced chicken meat, serves with a sunshine (fried egg) on top of the rice. It comes with a bowl of soup too.

And lastly, we shared the chicken wings together as our snack (actually it is our appetizer but we ate it after our meals).

Morganfield’s

I went back to Kuala Lumpur soon after my last service day in Singapore and the next day, I met up with two friends for “celebration”. One of them suggested to visit Pavilion Shopping Mall for our dinner and it was heavy jammed with many cars went to city after the rain stopped.

It took us more than 30 minutes to look for a parking space in the shopping mall when we arrived the place around 6PM. Since, western food was our choice for that night’s dinner, we picked Morganfield’s where we can share the platter together.

We ordered The Carnivore platter and bottomless drinks. I knew it was the month of the Octoberfest and none of us are drinker. So skip.

The Carnivore platter shared with 2 other friends consists of full BBQ spare ribs, half herbs roasted chicken, grilled Spicy Devil sausage, grilled Herby Hog sausage, garden salads, corns on the cob, corn breads and many fries.

The spare ribs are wonderful and heavenly done while the herbs roasted chicken was dry especially at the chicken breast part. My friend said the spicy devil sausage was quite spicy and prefer the herb type. Personally, both carried a different taste and nice. The corn bread was a bit dry texture. It would be better if it is more fluffy.

This portion is good for four persons because three of us find it difficult to finish the platter of meat. After all it is a satisfying dinner with great people.

Secret Recipe

Ambiance: The restaurant is quiet, not crowded. There is limited number of seats in the branch. The service is fast and the waiters are responsive.

The Fish and Chips with salads. It is one of their set lunch dishes. Food presentation is nice, the food taste is just right, the fish is fresh and the crumbs are crispy. It goes well with the tartar sauce. If you wish, you can have some chili sauce or ketchup for the fries.

The hot and cold lemon tea for two persons. And lastly the take away Walnut Brownie for evening tea.
