Honolulu Cafe Singapore

Finally, I got my hands on a polo bao! It felt like a never-ending quest, considering how seldom I venture into the realm of HK cafes in Singapore all by myself. But lo and behold, on that fateful day when I feasted with my dear aunt and cousins at Orchard, Singapore, destiny played its mischievous hand. There it was, like a hidden gem amid the bustling mall, the very HK cafe that fulfilled my longings.

Well, I could not resist the temptation of ordering a rich polo bao and a delightful egg tart, even though I was full. I mean, who needs self-control when there is a warm cup of milk tea begging to be enjoyed? My stomach might hate me later, but hey, it is all about living life on the edge, right?

The HK-style hot milk tea cannot be missed. It has a strong tea fragrance with a small trace of slight bitterness in between the milk tea. It goes well with the polo bun and egg tart. Definitely one of the good choices for a tea break on a lazy weekend.

I will give the same rating, 3.8 stars for the food that I tried. They were delicious and satisfying, but, it is not something that I will return real soon for another one.

Black Ink

It has been a while since my last food review. I think it needs some balance between food and travel blogs and my learning journey in Python. Of course, I do not want to make my readers feel boring about programming language and miss out the good food in Singapore!

A throwback event back in September 2018 when I received a voucher from the On Coffee Makers which has been promoting coffee culture in Singapore over the weeks through the Facebook Page.

I made a random choice out of the list given and I picked Black Ink because it is at the East side. It is convenient for me to travel nearby than far for a cup of coffee. And, this was a free coffee!

It took me a while to walk from the Bedok MRT station to the cafe. If you know where this cafe is located, then you will not ask why I chose to walk.

It is located at Swan Lake Ave, inside the Opera Estate, 2 bus stops away from Bedok Interchange. I think there is no bus stop inside this area. Most people here are staying in the terrace houses.

I was served by a girl at the counter when I saw her the coupon via my Facebook messenger. She did not aware about the coupon and asked me to wait for her supervisor.

The owner of the cafe came and he could not assist further as the coupon was not yet allowed to be used at his cafe even though, it has stated its start date. He did not hesitate to honor the voucher for me and asked what I would like to have.

The coupon was meant for coffee only and I chose my favourite latte. If you want to change to use soy milk, additional cost is applied. And ya, soy milk is cheaper than milk I thought.

I do not want to look cheapskate so I decided to order the butter croissant from the menu. They adopted the eatsy mobile application to allow customers to order food from their mobile phone and make payment cashlessly and they were having promotion or cash rebate at that time. So, why not!

Here you go, my latte and croissant were served shortly after that. The croissant is normal but crispy, flakes all over the plate, and the latte tastes just right, like any other specialty cafe.

However, the atmosphere there is good, it is quite quiet neighbourhood and the cafe is not crowded even I went there during weekend. It is a good place for study and small gathering. I think quite a number of neighbours visiting this cafe during the weekend as the friendly owner talks with them, just like they are often meeting up there.

I did not try other food from this cafe and reviews from the Internet looks good. Probably, I will consider to try here again next time when I want to organize a little study group.

Big Apple Restaurant

Weekend Hi-Tea at Big Apple Restaurant, Berjaya Times Square Hotel, Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. They offered the intercontinental hi-tea on the day I visited the restaurant before I took my bus back to Singapore. They offer quite a big selection of food, desserts and coffee and tea are included. The food comprises both cold meat, Sashimi and normal cooked dishes or cooked on the spot per request.

After trying few different dishes are the the best ones that you can choose next time if you visit here:-
Cold meat selection with salads.
The cold meats and salads are fresh and plenty to choose. For salads, they have few different salad dressings for you to choose from the salads bar. If you love breads, they have made few different breads and put at the baskets for people to choose. I tried it with the ham.

Spaghetti Aglio Olio cooked in a very small portion which I think it is good and we can try a little bit without wasting the food. I added every ingredients inside and added some salads from the salads bar. It tastes good and portion is just right for tasting.

For those who love desserts, the desserts bar has more than 10 different desserts to choose and you can find some local kuih too. Overall, their food is quite okay, portion of food is reasonable and they keep replenishing the food as well. However, try to avoid their steamed egg, it is totally overcooked steamed egg. It is hard and tasteless. Other than that, do press their coffee machine for some crafted coffee.

West 57th St Cafe

West 57th St Cafe (Zang Toi Cafe)

I was invited by a friend to go to this cafe for a tea break. My friend said the cafe has a nice cake that I must give a try. Oh… really? Ok, let’s go!

When we reached the cafe, there was few people in the cafe, we chose a quiet corner place to sit down and enjoyed our tea break. We ordered their tea time offers in which we chose our preferred tea and it came with a peice of Rock Bun and Banana chocolate cake. Yes, my friend wanted to introduce me to this banana chocolate cake.

Banana Chocolate Cake
It was rich with chocolate and sandwiched with raw banana. Well, it was so rich and each bite was full with the chocolate and banana taste. So, it is good to slowly eat and spare your time there.

And, what is Rock Bun? We were quite curious to find out and the tea time offered this as well. Here you go, this is how Rock Bun looks like :

It does look like a scone to me and when we cut it into half, this is how it looks like inside:

The rock bun’s taste a little dry for me with some raisins inside and marmalade. The great day completed with our preferred tea. I chose Mint tea while my friend chose Peach tea. It was a great tea break together. Thank you.

Big Apple

Another great sharing for buffer lunch. This time is the Big Apple at Berjaya Times Square Hotel, Kuala Lumpur. The theme for the buffet lunch on the day I visited the restaurant was Thai food.

Before I started, I walked around and took some pictures before other people walked in to the restaurant. Nicely placed and decorated fruits and desserts sections as below:-

When talk about desserts, I like this Thai’s dessert. I don’t know what it called but this dessert is quite refreshing to drink and it has some sliced jackfruit inside it.

Here is the rest of the food that I have tried. Enjoy!

Bread and butter

Beef Ball Noodle

Coffee and tea

The interior of the restaurant. It is quite spacious.

Wild Rice

The Wild Rice is located at level 9, The Bouvelard Hotel at Mid Valley (North side of Mid Valley). It is a 24-hour restaurant and very spacious. It offers quite big range of food – from local delicacies to the western cuisine and desserts. They have quite a lot of desserts to try on if you are going after desserts.

Besides that, you can make your cup of coffee or tea from the coffee making machine. This machine is just the normal coffee making machine that you can find it in your office.

The following are the food that I have tried which included the porridge, prawn noodle, local food, fish and chips, salads and some cold meat. For desserts, I tried their blueberry cake and for drinks, I tried their teh tarik and boh teh.

Armada Hotel

My second time visit to Armada Hotel at Petaling Jaya for high tea on 18th Jan 09

For RM38++ it is good for local food. Quite a number of varieties to choose from and some of them are quite nice to eat and some are just too plain. Quite like it because it offers unlimited fruit drink 🙂
