The Hainan Story 海南寶

It is one of the most anticipated restaurants and I wanted to try their food. Finally, I invited a friend to join me that evening for an early dinner. We were seated as soon as we arrived at the restaurant. There was not much crowd in the restaurant and we could choose our own table. Unfortunately, the restaurant faced west, and I could see the sunset’s sunlight enter the restaurant. It was a bit uncomfortable.

We proceeded to order the food from the menu and waited for the food to be served. We ordered curry noodles, curry rice and toast for sharing.

French toast

It is just normal French toast that nothing much I could describe.

Main course

I do not understand why the curry rice was flooded with all sorts of gravy. It consisted the curry gravy and vegetable gravy which diluted the curry sauce. I do not like it. The braised pork was so fatty that both of us did not really enjoy it. However, the braised pork was well-flavoured, the only delicious ingredient in this curry rice.

The curry noodles were delicious too but the cockles and long beans were missing from the bowl. Is it supposed to be part of it?

Overall,

This branch has the highest Google rating, however, I do not find the food is great and gets cold very fast too. I do not think that I will come back for other dishes soon.

Nana Original Thai Food

I visited the Thai restaurant before Christmas Day and can treat it as a small gathering with some tech friends. Since there were three of us, it was easier to look for a place to eat dinner after we abandoned the initial plan to have mookata at CT Hub.

There was a queue when we were there after 7pm and we waited for a while before being seated. Then, we have to order the food through the QR code scanning on the table. The payment can be made at the cashier counter before leaving the restaurant.

We ordered a clear tom yum soup, a plate of pad see ew (the Thai stir-fried noodles), a plate of roasted pork belly, and glass noodles with prawns for sharing. They do not offer free warm water so we ordered our cold drinks. The original Thai milk tea was very sweet, so I felt it was lucky to have so much ice inside my drink. It helped to dilute the drink before I drank it after eating.

All the food was overly well-tasted. I think this is only me-thing because I do not eat high sodium (or fish sauce in this case) food. The less liked is the clear tom yum soup. I got choked a few times when having the tom yum soup, so make sure to go with coconut milk. I think it helps.

If I were to choose one that I liked, it would be the glass noodle prawns dish, and pad see ew (the Thai stir-fried noodles). Although both are overly tasted, the texture of the noodles and the ingredients were good. The glass noodles did not turn soggy, instead, it was a little dry toward the bottom of the pot.

Thai Baang Bakery

My first visit to this bakery was last year, it was the COVID period, and safe distance measurement was still in-placed. I was around Lavender, Singapore to explore some of the food. And, I dropped by this bakery located outside of the Kitchener Complex, facing toward NTUC Fairprice, and the coffee shop opposite the building.

The shop is very small, with little space to stand and slowly choose, and everyone has to queue outside of the shop. Until, today, they still did not expand the space although they occupied both shop lots side by side.

Spicy sardine

I did not know what was nice to choose from so I googled the reviews while waiting for my turn. I bought the spicy sardine for breakfast. Even after I kept the bread overnight, the texture was still chewy when I lightly heat up the bread. The taste of the sardine was normal canned sardine, and it was quite spicy for me.

I revisited the bakery on the same day I went to try Luckin Coffee and Abundance for dinner. Since I was nearby the Lavender area, I wanted to get their bread for the next day’s lunch. I arrived at the shop late afternoon, there were not many choices and no queue as well.

Curry chicken and raisin cheese

Curry chicken’s ingredients included a quarter of the egg and curry potato. The curry tastes so good, similar to the local Singapore curry puff, and it was not overly spicy. I liked it. The fresh bread texture and quality are still well maintained. Soft and chewy bread, generous with ingredients yet it was not overflowed. Sadly, it does not have chicken bites inside, else it will be great!

I finally realized that the shop has nothing related to Thai. The name Thai Baang sounds similar to Chinese words, ‘too good’ or ‘very good’ when we speak in Mandarin.

The next day, I tried the raisin cheese bread. I saw a lot of sugar on top of the bread. It prompted me to make a cup of black coffee to go with the bread as my lunch. So, I did. The black coffee went well with the sweet raisin sugar cheese bread. The bitter and sweet were well-balanced, and a little hint of savoury taste from the cheese on top of the bread. This bread does not have any fillings inside.

I will love this bread if there is no sugar because I am reducing my sugar intake. Raisins are sweet enough. I quite recommend people to buy from this bread shop. I know that there are other bread shops around the Lavender MRT, I think this bread shop is worth the money because I can feel the weight of the bread compared to some of the local bread shops. I will revisit the shop again but not so soon, or whenever I am going around the Lavender area.

Google rating: 4.2 stars (IMHO, I will give a 4.0 star)

Luckin Coffee

I happened to be at Aperial Mall after getting the bread from Thai Baang bakery at Kitchener Complex. I was waiting for a friend to arrive before we walked to the nearby Taiwanese restaurant. While waiting for my friend, I walked around and was glad to see some of the old shops are still around, and there are many new shops too. One of them is Luckin Coffee.

I thought Luckin Coffee just came into Singapore, I did not expect they have a few branches around Singapore including one at Aperia Mall. There were plenty of people sitting inside the cafe which used to be another coffee brand too. I think some of the settings of the previous cafe remained the same.

Background

Luckin Coffee primarily used a blend of Arabica beans for its coffee offerings. Arabica beans are known for their high quality and desirable flavour characteristics. Luckin Coffee aimed to provide affordable coffee options to its customers, and as such, it sourced its Arabica beans from multiple origins to maintain a balance between cost and quality.

$0.99 promotion drink

As Luckin Coffee is having a promotion for new users who downloaded their application to order their first drink for $0.99 only. It is really a good deal especially ordering a cup of iced coffee that is worth $6 or $7. The price is not cheap either. So, it is a dollar off the drink and can choose any drink from their menu.

Once my friend arrived at Aperial Mall, we walked past this cafe and both of us decided to order a drink to share. She has friends in China who knew this brand well but we did not ask them for recommendations. Instead, we just tried our luck by picking the best seller.

Iced Coconut Latte

It is one of their top drinks, perhaps, it is not their best drink. I checked some bloggers who ordered this drink and shared their reviews.

Well, personally, I found the drink tasted quite salty. I wondered why, so some coconut water tastes savoury. The coffee and milk lightly tasted. It was covered by the intense saltiness from the coconut water. It tasted something like a salted caramel drink but less sweet. I did not enjoy it much and I did not want to waste the drink too.

I would not go for this flavour anymore. I think it is good to try their hot Americano to see how its actual black coffee tastes. Overall, I am not putting high hope on their coffee, so I will not be rushing to try 2nd cup.

Address: Aperia Mall, 12 Kallang Ave, #01-34, Singapore 339511.
Google rating: 3.9 stars (IMHO, for the drink I will give 3.0 stars).

Abundance

The social media shared many reviews about this restaurant, and We ordered a bowl of beef noodles, a crispy chicken bao and a peanut ice-cream for sharing. The staff shared his recommendations which were opposite of what social media shared, and what we intended to order. He told us many influencers tried the same things and share the same reviews. Personally, he tried the food, and he suggested the opposite way.

Beef noodles

I liked their beef noodles; the meat was tender and well-tasted. The meat portion is pretty good enough. The noodles cooked al-dente and did not turn soggy even though we left them for a while. The soup was fine; it was not something with a strong flavour or spicy, and it was less oily too. I think without the presence of chilli oil, the whole eating experience will be different.

Bao

The crispy chicken bao is our choice to try. He recommended us salted egg and their signature bao but I did not do it because it would be too heavy. The mango salad on the top was appetising, and the crispy chicken texture was good. The skin was crunchy, well marinated, and the chicken meat was tender and juicy (or oily, not sure). The meat portion was huge; it was bigger than the bao itself.

Dessert

Lastly, the peanut ice-cream without coriander, my friend did not coriander! It was normal. The staff recommended sesame ice-cream instead. Maybe, it is nicer with coriander I do not know.

I will come back again one day and try the ice-cream with coriander, it is just to satisfy my craving. For food, I think I will go for beef noodles or their rice selection which I have not tried yet and small side dishes. I will not be ordering the bao again.

Comparable with Niu Dian Noodles

For someone who likes Taiwanese beef noodles, I think this restaurant sells pretty good beef noodles. It is comparable with Niu Dian Noodles too, except Abundance is less oily. The beef noodles from Niu Dian Noodles can go with or without chilli oil. If order the non-spicy version, I think their soup base would be clear soup rather than the spicy version that looked oily.

After trying both beef noodles, I prefer clear soup (less spicy) over spicy soup (more chilli oil). Please share your opinion in the comment box below.

Quan Co Ba 2

A few years ago, I was working around the Lavender area in Singapore. Two of my colleagues who are Vietnamese recommended trying the Vietnamese stall that sells pretty good beef pho. The stall runs by Vietnamese girls, and they can speak basic English to take orders.

Soon, this bowl of spicy beef pho sets a standard of what beef pho should be in my life. Although the broth is not something close to home-cooked, it is one of the good ones with spices. I liked to add some lime juice whenever I ordered the spicy beef pho. It gives extra flavour to the broth.

The stall has been moving around within the Lavender area a couple of times, on my recent visit I found them at 153 Cafe where the famous 88 Roasted Meat is located too.

Address:  153 Tyrwhitt Rd, Singapore 207566. (It has ceased its operations permanently)

Chef Kin Hong Kong Wanton Noodle

Hong Kong wanton noodle differs from the local Singapore/Malaysia wanton noodle. Even, Singapore and Malaysia have slight differences in the sauce mixture.

The noodle is thinner and sticky than usual wanton noodles. The texture is still quite al-dente. But, I had a hard time eating the noodles. It did not appear to be springy or mushy to me.

Usually, Hong Kong-style will not add chilli sauce to the noodles. For some Hong Kong wanton noodles, there is an alkaline taste. It did not taste bitter to me, maybe the alkaline level was not high.

The wanton size is always bigger than usual but it is not as big as those in Hong Kong. Also, Hong Kong-style wanton usually consists of prawns. These wantons are fresh, crunchy and well-tasted. I think it still can be better.

Helmed by an ex-Crystal Jade chef

It comes with a small bowl of soup that tasted quite plain for my preference. Overall, it is good for a try, but I do not like the texture of the noodles.

Address: 808 French Road, Singapore 200808. (It has permanently ceased its operation. There are other outlets in Singapore)

Singapore Hawker Food – Part 5

I have been trying to blog differently recently by having a theme. To support local Singaporean hawker food, I set up a new theme called Singapore Hawker Food, tried out the local food shared by Singaporeans on social media and shared my opinions. I am sure you are the same as me, would like to know the views from a non-food blogger’s or Youtuber’s point of view.

I am glad that one or two people are willing to eat with me so that I can try different food and give more food reviews. I wish we could continue to try more food together and share our thoughts. Also, I am happy whenever we are together enjoying our food.

I may be active on Instagram and Facebook Page, and I try the food by myself without getting sponsorship or partnership. It is purely based on my opinions and preferences. No offences.

Dunman Road Char Siew Wan Ton Mee

I visited the Dunman Food Court twice but did not order any food. I walked around and found a few stall opened, while the rest were closed during weekend. Hence, I decided trying some food here with my friend. The queue at the wanton mee stall was quite long but moving fast.

The chilli paste is quite spicy according to the lady who took our order. So, we told her to put the chilli at the side of the plate. When I mixed the noodles together with the chilli paste, the whole plate of noodles was spicy and slightly flavourful. I am unsure whether chilli overpowered the sauce. I loved the egg noodles texture; I believed it is handmade because of the size of the noodles. Lastly, I loved the soup too.

Address: Dunman Food Centre, 271 Onan Rd, #02-19, Singapore 424768.

Cheng Mun Chee Kee

It is located at Foch Road; it is not the same stall as another shop with a similar name at Jalan Besar called Authentic Mun Chee Kee King Of Pig’s Organ Soup. There is a history between these two shops. They originated from the same family but subsequently went their own ways. Both shops serve a similar kind of food.

My preference is Cheng Mun Chee Kee because the soup matches my taste bud. I can go with and without rice for a bowl of soup. My usual ingredients include lean meat, meatballs, beancurd and a generous amount of salted vegetables. The amount is always generous, and the price is reasonable. The soup serves with some Chinese parsley too.

I tried their other dishes, such as the steamed minced meat. It has salted fish added to the minced meat making it more flavourful. Another dish that my friend always eats (because she does not eat pork) is sesame oil chicken. The aroma from the sesame oil is pretty strong, and the chicken is well-marinated and tastes delicious. It is suitable to eat with white rice.

Address: 24 Foch Road, Singapore 209263.

Satay Solo

Bedok Food Court, this Malay stall sells a delicious mutton satay at the same place. However, the satay serves at night only. The mutton satay is well-marinated and serves in its perfection. The meat is still juicy and tender, and the same goes for beef satay.

Address: Bedok Food Centre, 1 Bedok Rd, Singapore 469572.

Mui Siong Minced Meat Noodle

Mui Siong Minced Meat Noodle at Koufu Tampines St 44. I saw it in Instagram posts. Today, I dropped by to give it a try. I liked the noodle texture and gave generous portions too. I ordered the special meatballs noodle with slightly sweet yet peppery pork soup for the dry version. So far, it is my next best BCM noodle after Dalian Minced Meat Noodle.

Address: Koufu, 478 Tampines St 44, 01-221, Singapore 520478.

Ayam Panggang, BBQ Riverside

On the day I wish to eat rice, and I happen to be at Tampines Mall Food Court, the ayam panggang (grilled chicken) dish from BBQ Riverside is one of my choices. I liked their grilled chicken which is tender and well-marinated. The kicap manis (sweet soy sauce) mix well with the curry sauce. Sometimes, it is a little bit sweet for my taste bud. Besides the grilled chicken, it includes a fried egg and some cabbage.

It is a pretty balanced meal with a bowl of sweet corn soup.

Address: Kopitiam Tampines Mall, 4 Tampines Central 5, #04-27/28/29, Singapore 529510.

Li Yuan Mee Pok, Bedok

A Japanese fusion mee pok that I tried at the Bedok branch. It was a dry version of mee pok with shoyu and chilli sauce. I can request without chilli sauce. Also, I tried the dry mushroom with minced meat during the second visit.

The bowl consists of springy mee pok noodles, abalone slices, pork balls, lean pork, minced pork, pork lard, and two fatty pieces of Japanese chashu. While mushrooms with minced meat do not have the Japanese chashu. Their mee pok is springy and cooked al-dente.

It had a little bit of vinegar taste when I ate the mushroom with minced meat. The noodles have too much sauce so I have to drain off some of the sauce from the noodles. I prefer the drier version.

I will visit again but not when it needs to wait for 45 minutes.

Address: 760 Bedok Reservoir View, 01-337, Singapore 470760. (Closed)

Chef Kang’s Noodle House

I did not have additional comments about this plate of wanton noodles. It is as good as the Weng Kang Ji Wanton Noodle at Golden Mile Food Centre, but the latter uses different sauces for their dry version. If you are keen to find out more about Weng Kang Ji Wanton Noodle, refer to the below link.

Address: 11 Lor 3 Toa Payoh, Block C Jackson Square, Singapore 319579.

Mandarin Hainan Chicken Rice (文华海南鸡饭)

In my previous post on Singapore Hawker Food Part 4, I mentioned that I would like to try this stall to compare it with the roasted chicken and pork stall at Food Park in Tampines West. I managed to head down to Ang Mo Kio to visit my cousin’s house, and I dropped by the Mayflower Food Centre located next to the Mayflower MRT station. Google’s review of this stall is quite low, and it has 3 stars only.

My opinion is the rice was nice and fragrant. The soup was nice too. The roasted chicken and roasted pork were on average only. I think maybe barbecue pork (char siew) is better, I could not remember now. I did not manage to try their char siew on that day.

This stall does not have a mix of the three items set. It could be more expensive compared to the Food Park at Tampines West. Check out the link below for part 4 to know more.

Address: 162 Ang Mo Kio Ave 4, #01-11, Singapore 560162.

Simon Road Hokkien Mee

It has relocated to Kovan food centre, and I went to try it for the first time. This is the dry version of Hokkien mee, it looks delicious with the usual ingredients such as prawns, squid and beansprouts. I mixed all their chilli paste together with the noodles after I tasted the noodles with and without the chilli paste. I would suggest going with the chilli paste for the extra flavour, and the chilli paste does not overpower the overall Hokkien mee’s flavour.

Fu Zhou Oyster Cake

It might look quite expensive for a piece of fried delicacy. The oyster cake is stuffed with lots of minced meat, and some oysters. It is full of meat actually. The last time I tried it was in the year 2017 at Maxwell Food Centre. It is rare to see it everywhere. I bought a piece of oyster cake back home, and guess what, the brown bag absorbed most of the oil. Even, though I did not eat it immediately, it remains crispy from the outside.

Qinde Portugese Egg Tarts

Qinde Egg Tarts & Pastries at Whampoa Makan Place has a 4.9 Google rating. It surprised me. I checked the reviews, and I quite agreed with some of them.

The bottom of the pastry is soft; I think most are the same unless is pastry is hard-base. To make it crisper, I heated it using an air fryer at 100°c for less than 5 minutes after refrigerating it overnight.

The egg tart’s size, I think, is reasonable and standard size. The sweetness is acceptable, less sweet. I hope it can be less sweet. It satisfies my taste, at least.

Satay Solo

Satay is not the food that I always eat. I have no special preference for which stall I liked. Bedok Food Court, this Malay stall sells a delicious mutton satay. However, the satay serves at night only. The mutton satay is well-marinated and serves in its perfection. The meat is still juicy and tender, and the same goes for beef satay. The satay is an inexpensive, reasonable price per stick. If I remember correctly, beef and mutton are the same price.

Roasted Chicken & Pork, Food Park Tampines West

A decent one with crispy roasted pork skin. It is something good to worth for the price, value for money. I might be paying more if ordering it at other hawker stalls, but the quality and taste surely be different. More comments are below in the Instagram photograph.

I may want to compare it with the stall at Ang Mo Kio, Mayflower Market and Food Centre.

Xing Ji Wanton Noodle, Tampines Round Market

Revisit Tampines Round Market and the wanton noodle stall, Xing Ji. You may think it is shredded chicken with mushroom and noodles. Actually, It is wanton noodles without char siew. All in one bowl except char siew (barbecue pork).

Dynasty Fried Porridge

I came here to try the KL-style Hokkien Mee after logging for it for quite a while. I do not eat KL-style Hokkien Mee that often, or it was not my favourite when I was in Malaysia. It turns out to be a good experience having a plate of noodles that taste similar to those that I can get in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. It uses a lot of pork lards to cook it because after a while, when the noodles get cold, the taste and the thick noodles turn to be quite jelak (sick of eating it).

They offer other types of zi char dishes, and it is actually famous for its fried porridge. My preferred fried porridge will be at Bedok, but I do not mind trying this version to make a comparison in the future.

Address: 30 Foch Rd, #01-02, Singapore 209276.

Fish soup at Tampines EastLink Food Court

I order these fish soup noodles whenever I head to the Tampines East Link food court. It is one of my favourites food in this food court. It is not the best fish soup in Tampines; however, I love their generous ingredients and add seaweed.

Address: 8 Tampines Central 1, #01-18, Singapore 529543

JOFA Meepok

From the Google reviews’, this stall has 4.4 stars. I liked its noodle texture; cooked al-dente with a good mix of chilli paste and vinegar. The ingredients are much the same as normal BCM except it does not have the pork livers that I do not eat that much too. Overall, it is pretty delish, fulfilling and worth a try. IMHO, this bowl of noodles during my visit deserved a 4.5 star.

Address: 824 Tampines Street 81, #01-38, Singapore 520824.

Dynasty Fried Porridge

The black version of Hokkien mee is KL, Malaysia style. I seldom eat the dark version compared to the white version of Hokkien mee (Singapore version) because of the thick dark sweet soya sauce. Also, it is hard to find a good place that offers a good wok hei (wok heat) Hokkien mee in Singapore.

I craved a plate of Hokkien mee recently, and Google brought me to this stall located at Foch Road, near Lavender. I was not there alone so there were two plates of different noodles in my Instagram post below; the fried roasted pork egg noodle and the KL style Hokkien mee.

The ingredients of the Hokkien mee are mainly pork slices, some green vegetables and pork lard. I cannot recall if there are any medium-sized prawns included.

The dark sweet sauce was slightly too much and got thicker when the noodles started getting cold because of the pork lard oils. This is the only point that affects the overall rating for this plate of noodles.
